Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, happens when infection and inflammation affect the gums and bone that hold your teeth in place. Early on, called gingivitis, your gums may become tender, red, and bleed easily. If untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where gums pull away from teeth, causing loosening or even tooth loss, and may damage the jawbone. While adults most commonly develop this condition, children are not immune. The root cause is often inadequate oral care habits.
Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the top threats to your oral health. According to a recent Dental Association report, nearly half (47.2%) of adults over age 30 have some form of periodontal disease, and the risk grows with age. Among seniors 65 and older, the rate climbs to 70.1%. Men are more likely to be affected than women (56.4% vs 38.4%).
